Two Muslim women were ordered to leave a swimming pool in a French holiday village on the southwest coast for wearing body-covering "burkinis".

The women had plunged into the pool at le Port Leucate wearing full body swimsuits, including a head-covering hijab veil, but were immediately told to get out of the water.

The incident occurred less than two weeks after French MPs voted to ban body and face-covering garments, including the full Islamic veil, from public places including the street.

Under the new law, due to come into force early next year, women face a fine or community service for hiding their faces in public and those forcing women to wear the full veil risk prison.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has described the garment as "not welcome" in the staunchly secular French republic.

In this case, the women at the Rives des Corbieres holiday camp were told to leave as they had breached the camp's rules allowing only conventional bikinis or one-piece swimsuits "for hygiene reasons".

Police received conflicting accounts of what happened next.

The pool's lifeguard filed a complaint saying the husband of one of the women threatened him with a bowling ball.

The husband filed a complaint claiming security personnel beat him up.

Marie-Paule Bardeche, a regional government official said: "This is above all an issue stemming from the holiday centre's internal regulations, in place for hygiene and sanitary reasons.

"Access to the swimming pool is reserved for ordinary swimsuit wearers. Even long shorts are forbidden." Last year a Muslim woman was banned from wearing a "burkini" at a public pool in a Paris suburb, also for hygiene reasons.

She later tried and failed to sue the council for discrimination.

Police have this year also stopped and fined two women for wearing a burka while driving, saying it contravened road rules as it impaired their field of vision.

The holiday camp where the burkini incident took place is run by a staunchly secular organisation called the "Aude federation of secular works".

Norwegian newspaper reprints Prophet Mohammed cartoons

They were used to illustrate an article about Kurt Westergaard, the Danish cartoonist whose home was broken into by an Islamist armed with an axe a week ago.

It printed six out of the 12 drawings that infuriated Muslims around the world when the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten first published them in 2005.

Several of the drawings were seen as linking Islam and its revered prophet to terrorism and suicide bombings, with Westergaard's cartoon showing him wearing a turban in the shape of a bomb.

On Jan 2, an axe-wielding 28-year-old man broke into Westergaard's home screaming for "revenge" and "blood". Police - alerted by the cartoonist who had hidden in a panic room - shot and arrested him.

Aftenposten's editor, Hilde Haugsgjerd, said it seemed "natural and justified to republish the artistic and journalistic body of work that is likely the cause of this violence".

Aftenposten first published copies of the cartoons in 2005 but did not join newspapers in many other countries when they reprinted in 2006 some or all of them, citing freedom of expression.

Angry crowds demonstrated across the Muslim world, leaving dozens of people dead in riots and causing damage to Danish embassies and the country's export trade due to boycotts.

I AM really perturbed and irked by the latest development involving the interference and influence of SMS language in the writing of school students, which I have yet to see at college and university levels.

Probably this is due to the fact that college and university students do not hand in written work. School students are so used to communicating with their friends via SMS that they transfer such language to their writing in school.

If such influence is not checked and corrected, chances are that students who are sitting for major examinations are going to lose many marks, which will affect their grades.

Lately, as I was going through some school examination papers, I noticed that SMS language is frequently used in their writing.

Here are some of the examples:

Will: wil ,Okay: ok ,Things: tings ,All: al

Although this influence is only among average and below-average students, if it is not curbed it may in time seriously affect academic writing.

To my dear students,

1. Below are the marks of the mid-semester test (25%) plus the presentation (25%). It is over 50. The remaining 50 will come from the final exam. Please study hard for the exam and do the practices from the book and the online exercises available on the net. Doing it with a partner or in small groups would also help. Practice makes perfect!

2. Hope you benefitted from the course. One thing about grammar though, knowing the rules is one thing, being able to use it correctly is another. What's important is being able to use it correctly. One of the best ways (in the long run) is to read and read and READ. Reading a lot of books makes you familiar with the language usage. It also increases your vocabulary. Over your +-4 years stay at the university, you can finish 48 novels if you were to read 1 novel/book per month! What if you can finish 2 per month? That means you would be 100 more books enriched in knowledge when you graduate!

3. Also, make full use of your +-4 year stint at IIU. You have been chosen to study at a university whereby you can learn all kinds of knowledge, be it worldly or non-worldly. Get good academic results AND at the same time strive to become a better (if not the BEST) Muslim. Study the Islamic faith well, learn to recite the Quran correctly and beautifully, then understand it and finally PRACTICE it! العلم بلا عمل كشجرة بلا ثمر

Last but not least, we do not have to go far to find role models. Our role models should be the ones who can guide us to success both in the world and the hereafter. Let Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) be our best role model as a human. Sayyidah Fatimah and Khadijah as the best role models of a complete woman. Sayyiday Shabab ahlul Jannah: Hasan and Husain as the best examples of youth; and their father: the best son-in-law, married to the sayyidatun-Nisaa' al-aalamiin, the fearless warrior and owner of Dhulfiqar : Sayyidina 'Ali karramallahu wajhah as an exemplary figure in terms of courage, intelligence and piety. Together with the other great companions of the Prophet (s.a.w.), these five people are luminary figures in Islamic, nay, human history. So do make an effort to study their lives better so that they may bring light into our own lives.

It has been fun to be able to teach you all, hope you found this course fun too and my apologies for any shortcomings on my part.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 21-year-old has done Malaysia proud when she was adjudged top student in English at the University of London’s Queen Mary College recently.

Adelina Raisa Sufian, who obtained a Bachelor of Arts (English) degree with first class honours, won the coveted 2009 Westfield Trust Prize for outstanding academic achievement in English at the university last month.

Commenting on her achievement, Adelina attributed her success to encouragement from her parents, businessman Datuk Sufian Majid and Datin Alissa Fitri.

“I set a target throughout my study,” she said. “Most importantly, we must have the determination and confidence to succeed.

“I am glad that I was able to compete with native speakers of English, as well as students from other countries,” she told Ber- nama.

Adelina, who is also an accomplished pianist, has represented Queen Mary College in choir and mathematics competitions.

While pursuing higher education at the Oakham School, Britain, in 2004, she won the Headmaster’s Prize and was adjudged top student in Mathematics, English and Chemistry.

On her future, Adelina said she planned to write, pursue a Master’s degree and work in Malaysia.

“I love my country,” she added.

The Night of nisf (mid) Shaban

Various Islamic scholars have recommended special worshiping during the night of 15th of Shaban. This is based on the saying (Hadith) of prophet Muhammad , the meaning of which is that during the night of 15th of Shaban, Allah will say "is there any person repenting so that I forgive him, and any person seeking provision so that I provide for him, and any person with distress so that I relieve him, and so on until dawn." reported by Ibn Majah.

This is the night occurring between 14th and 15th day of Shaban. Traditions of Prophet Muhammad , show that it is a meritorious night in which the people of the earth are attended by special Divine Mercy.

On the Night of 15th Shaban, after Maghrib or Isha prayer it is traditional practice to read Surah Yasin and make special supplications for good health, protection from calamities and increased Iman.

According to tradition this night has special blessings that are directed towards the faithful. Therefore, as much as possible, this night should be spent in worship and total submission to Allah Almighty. Also, fasting is recommended on the day immediately following this Night, i.e. the 15th day of Shaban.
